CHINA CAN BE A SEAMLESS EXPERIENCE
Seamless to Shanghai
Many travelers may be a little reluctant to venture into countries in which they are not familiar with the language or may be anxious about the necessity to assimilate into the local culture in order to enjoy themselves. As a result many folks are deprived of the wonderful experiences to be found out there in this big world, and may never understand the value presented by these opportunities. China may be a good example.
Viking River Cruises has the answer for not only the experienced traveler, but also for the more timorous. Viking can provide an ‘experience’ which will never be forgotten, but they are also masters of calming the nerves of those first time, “not so worldly” travelers by virtue of their expertise in "seamless" travel.
Let’s take for example their twelve day "Imperial Jewels of China" itinerary which starts in the now bustling city of Beijing, and seamlessly wends its way through six-thousand years of Chinese history and culture all the way to Shanghai.
Beijing airport is a far cry from the one I remember almost twenty years ago, when I recall being transported from the airplane across a bumpy airfield in a rickety old bus, to the old PEK terminal building. It was no larger than the ‘original’ old terminal building of my local John Wayne Airport of twenty years ago.
Despite the enormous size of the beautiful new Beijing airport, members of the Imperial Jewels of China group arrived at varying times throughout the day, from around the world. Uniformed Viking representatives were there en masse, ready to greet you as you emerged from the customs area. The Viking team were not difficult to miss, but if for some reason you didn't find them, they would surely find you and whisk you away to a waiting air conditioned coach for the short ride to your five-star hotel in the city.
An example of the textbook ‘flow’ of the day tours would come during the first day when the coach dropped us off at one end of Tiananmen Square. From there, Terry guided us through this enormous square, after which, we crossed the road via an underground walkway to take a tour of the Forbidden City – all the while, Terry was providing a running commentary on what we were viewing using the wireless microphone linked to our individual audio headsets providing the group with all kinds of useful information. After
My purpose is not to detail the day by day itinerary, which is a very comprehensive one and which offers an intriguing insight into the wonders of China. To fully appreciate this experience, it is of course, much better when done in person using Viking River Cruises. However, I wanted to relay the ease with which one can enjoy oneself - even a person who may be a little apprehensive about travelling away from the ‘traditional’ tourist routes, perhaps in a strange country. They can feel quite at ease when traveling with Viking in any country, but particularly in such countries as China or Russia, where Viking enjoy the reputation of ‘most experienced’.
I don’t believe I lifted my suitcase one time, from the day I arrived in China to the day I left. The baggage was picked up from the room whenever departing from a hotel, it was delivered to the airport for our intra-China flights, checked all the way through – and I didn’t see my baggage until I entered my hotel room at the other end. Upon arrival at the airports, our intra-China airline tickets were obtained by our guide Terry, making the airport experience very smooth – additionally, the actual flight experience was in many ways better than that of many American based airlines. There was plenty of leg room on board, and even for the shortest flights, a complimentary light lunch was served very swiftly by smiling young Chinese flight attendants.
Every step of the way, (and I don’t mean to repeat myself) it was a seamless experience from the airport to the hotels, from the hotels to each daily excursion, then to dinner, to the theater, to the airports………and of course, to the Viking Emerald.
The programming on the giant wall mounted flat screen TV will keep you informed about the outside world, however, I suspect that even if you may have been one of those who might have been a little reluctant to sample this part of the world – I would also suspect that at this point in time you are now totally immersed in the experience, ready to take advantage of everything that the Viking Emerald can offer, and have now realized how simple Viking River Cruises can make your China experience.
By now you have probably also discovered that from the moment you step aboard you are welcomed with big smiles from all of the staff, and they very soon know you by your first name whether you are wearing your name badge or not – everybody just seems to remember who you are. You will experience service the likes of which you may never have experienced before – all accompanied by a constant smile, and swift attention. You have also by now discovered the fine food aboard the Emerald, and are perhaps using some taste buds which you never knew you had. The food choices are sure to satisfy gourmands of all levels.
I am hoping that this information will ‘whet the appetite’ of both experienced and not-so-experienced travelers. Why not contact us so that we may provide assistance in planning the journey of a lifetime on which you can enjoy your own China experience.
